New Islamabad International Airport construction enters second phase

KARACHI: Development work on New Islamabad International Airport (NIIA) has entered its second phase subsequent to the completion of its designing project by two foreign companies recently, an aviation official told Daily Times on Friday.

French company ADPi and CPG of Singapore have been selected for designing the airport infrastructure and terminal building of NIIA. The project was worked out through three different levels namely concept designing, primary and final designing.

The terminal building has been designed to handle traffic of nine million passengers per year and handle 100,000 metric tonnes of cargo per annum. Now, the construction work would be started that will cost Rs 3 billion.

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) had assigned the designing project to these companies in January 2007. As per agreement, the CAA will give four percent commission of total amount of the project at the end of its construction work. A total of Rs 30 billion has been allocated for its construction. A US-based consultant company, Louis Berger Group will also share this commission in it.

President General Pervaz Musharraf inaugurated the NIIA in April 2007 and it is planned to be completed by 2010
